Hazardous Electronics and Chemicals

Many electronics and chemicals are considered hazardous, and should not be put in the trash. Please take to HEC3, mobile collection or EnviroBusiness Day.

The following electronic items are considered hazardous due to substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and brominated flame retardants.*

*Not all electronics are hazardous. See our list of electronics that are NOT hazardous (such as blow dryers or vacuum cleaners). An item IS hazardous if it contains any of the following: digital display, circuit board, or rechargeable battery. If in doubt, bring the item to us!

hazardous chemicals

The following chemicals are considered hazardous because of the potential to cause a fire, release toxic fumes, pose a health risk for collectors, or contaminate the environment. It is safe to dispose of EMPTY chemical containers, aerosol cans, or paint cans in the trash.

How to Package & Transport Chemicals

  1. Do NOT mix chemicals together.
  2. Keep products in original labeled containers if possible.
  3. Place containers in cardboard boxes; use crumpled newspaper in the boxes to prevent breakage.
  4. Place leaky containers in clear plastic bags and transport in boxes with newspaper.
  5. Put boxes in the trunk or in the back of vehicle away from passenger.

hazardous items not accepted

These "special" hazardous waste items are not accepted at HEC3 or a mobile collection. Click on the item for safe disposal options:

  • automotive or boat batteries
  • explosives (including guns)
  • fire extinguishers
  • medical, biological, or infectious waste
  • medicine
  • propane tank
  • radioactive waste
  • smoke detector

hazardous business waste

Businesses may dispose of hazardous electronics, chemicals, or process waste (residues from the manufacturing process) at an EnviroBusiness Day. A waste composition analysis may be required. For more information, visit www.pinellascounty.org/bizwaste or call 464-7500.
