March
2007 Vote
The Penny for Pinellas was
first established as an alternate means of
funding Pinellas County’s capital improvement
program in 1989 for a ten-year period, 1990
– 2000. It was renewed in 1997 (by a 65% margin)
for anther ten years, 2001 – 2010. On March
13, 2007, Pinellas County votes will decide
whether or not to extend the Penny for a third
decade, 2010 – 2020.
It is estimated that a third
Penny will raise $1.94 billion slated for
capital improvement projects in the areas
of transportation, public safety, parks and
recreation, storm water drainage and government
facilities.
The Penny for Pinellas has
become an important way for Pinellas County
to provide for the needs of both its current
and future citizens, as Pinellas County grows
and develops over the next decade. Without
the Penny, many public projects would not
be completed until years into the future or
not done at all. Funding for essential projects
would revert back to falling on homeowners’
property taxes.
If the penny is not extended,
the millage rate equivalent to generate the
same annual amount is 2.3 mills.
